It changed our lives!!

Betty and Peter Jones

In October 1961 we moved to Bramcote Hills from Coventry, immediately our second child was born. A new environment, a new job, new neighbours and new family - what an upheaval!

Soon after this came a note through our letterbox. Were we interested in drama, badminton, chess or perhaps participating in a baby-sitting group? We duly ticked the items indicating an interest in badminton and baby-sitting and, sure enough, before long we were invited to start up the Badminton Group.

Interest was sufficient in the area to start up a section. Obstacles were overcome as they arose, playing in the Bramcote Hills Lower School Hall, the Grammar School and the Support School behind the Swimming Baths before finally finishing up at the Robert Shaw School on the far side of Raleigh Island. A league team was formed and many a good evening was had by all. We often had more players than facilities and had to play table tennis on the school stage between games to keep the interest going. This entailed taking the table tennis table to and fro on top of the car, and one icy evening it fell off and slid at least 50 yards along the Derby Road. The road had only recently been made into a dual carriageway and traffic was light, so I don't think anyone else saw what had happened! !

Trophy presentations were made at the Community Association annual dinner and dance at Grange Farm, Toton.

It was more than that however. Strong family relationships grew in the area, many of which still exist today. Yes, Bramcote Hills Community Association has much to be proud of and filled a much-needed requirement of those days.
